Seven Days in Western Australia

Planning a short adventure in Western Australia? Here are some ideas to get you started…

Day 1

Fly into Perth and check into Alex Hotel in cultured Northbridge. This vibrant and artsy suburb has some of the best bars and hipster-cafés in Western Australia, as well as a range of awesome, urban shops to make your retail-dreams come true. If you’re hungry, eat at the hotel-owned (and very tasty) Italian restaurant, Shadow Wine Bar & Dining Room, just behind Alex Hotel. Rumour has it, they have just launched a brand new, irresistible breakfast menu…

Exploring Elizabeth Quay is an absolute essential. There’s a wealth of of things to do here, including the BHP Billiton Water Park and island playground. You can hop on and off the Perth Explorer City Sightseeing bus to explore more of the area and tick off some key Perth attractions.

Day 2

Get a taste for local produce at Perth Farmers’ Market. If you’re canny, you’ll stock up for future picnics in Kings Park and Botanic Garden. In fact, you could spend all day exploring and relaxing in this 1000-acre, inner-city haven. In the evening, discover some of the city’s quirky laneway bars and restaurants. Two of our favorites include the Mechanic Institute, home to a stunning, industrial rooftop deck, and Bar 399, which has a cool courtyard and a chilled-out atmosphere.

Day 3

Pander to your inner-adventurer in Rockingham, learning about wild dolphins – and swimming with them – on the tour of a lifetime. This amazing experience also comes with incredible ocean views. All that splashing around will make you hungry, so treat yourselves to fish and chips whilst watching the sunset on Cottesloe Beach. Super romantic.

Day 4

Explore Margaret River; renowned for its heavenly food and wine. Enjoy the freshest seafood you’ve ever tasted, whisked straight from the ocean to the kitchen to your plate. Check out one of the famous wineries in the area – Voyager Estate, for example. Having experienced Margaret River in all its gourmet-glory, drive onto Pemberton, famed for its truffles. If you hit the right season, you can join in with a truffle hunt. Fun fact: truffles grow up to 30 centimetres beneath the earth’s surface (luckily you’ll take specially trained truffle-finding dogs on the hunt, to do the groundwork for you).

Day 5

Drive on from Pemberton to the port city of Albany, stopping to stretch your legs on Northcliffe’s famous forest sculpture walk, which features specially commissioned art works from a range of art forms. After exploring Albany’s artisan stores, visiting the National Anzac Centre and admiring the rugged mountains, drive back to Perth (the journey will take around four and a half hours).

Day 6

Fly back to the United States from Perth via Singapore. Enjoy a stopover in vibrant Singapore, hopping on the SIA bus to explore the city and its cultural melting pot. Have a meal at a hawker restaurant and cocktails in one of the glamorous rooftop bars. Explore the central business district’s restaurants, stores and bars, and wander around Little India and Chinatown. Pick up presents for the folks back home from one of the megamalls – the 20-storey Paragon is a good start.
