Why you should visit Singapore in 2018

Balmy temperatures, a foodie wonderland, shopping-thrills galore and a melting pot of art and culture make Singapore a unique spot to visit that’s en route to many destinations. Here’s why we think you should make this the year you visit Singapore…

Because it’s the Year of the Dog

And by that, we’re talking about Chinese New Year (also known as Spring Festival or the Lunar Festival). The Year of the Dog is said to be auspicious, so it seems like a pretty perfect year to visit. If you’re here during Chinese New Year festivities in February, make sure to go to the elaborate parades in Chinatown, catch the stunning fireworks at Marina Bay and eat traditional delicacies such as dumplings and tangerines.

Because you should try the coffee here

Known as ‘kopi’, coffee is the national beverage in Singapore. Head to a kopitiam (coffee-house), to get your caffeine-fix, as well as kaya toast, a local specialty made with coconut jam and sugar. As for your cup of Joe, typically the beans are roasted with butter and served with evaporated milk and sugar. Tip: make sure to ask for ‘kopi’ and not‘coffee’ to get the real stuff, instead of a cup of Nespresso.

Because you can pretend you’re a movie star

The premiere of Crazy Rich Asians, the movie based on the best-selling book by Kevin Kwan, is set for release later this year. The movie boasts a star-studded cast and was filmed in Singapore, so you can spot film locations when you visit. Kwan grew up in Singapore, so get ready for an authentic introduction to the Lion City’s culture when the film comes out in August 2018.

Because you can eat like a king cheaply

It’s no secret that Singapore has some of the best street food in the world. Thanks to myriad  hawker centres, visitors can easily sample Malaysian, Indian and Chinese dishes, or meals influenced by all of these culinary flavors. Fancy chilli crab, spicy laksa, dim sum, noodles galore or Michelin-starred chicken? Singapore has all of these choices and more – for around $2 each.

Because you need an escape

Singapore is clean and easy to get around, and the locals are friendly, so don’t worry about travel-stress here. If you want to escape the buzz for a bit, grab a drink at Marina Sands’ rooftop bar for a 360-degree view of the city, or explore the peaceful, exotic Gardens by the Bay.
