It’s fair to say that Haw Par Villa is not your average theme park! It was built in the 1930s and became famous for its grotesque depictions of the 10 Courts of Hell, or ‘Diyu’, the realm of the dead in Chinese mythology.
Interestingly, the park was created by the Burmese Aw brothers who created Tiger Balm. Most Singaporean kids who visited the park on school trips in the 70s and 80s will tell you of their nightmares but today, it’s an all-inclusive park covering millennia of Chinese legends including the stories of the Journey to the West and Madame White Snake. You will also see over 1,000 colourful tableaux and statues telling the story of mythical China.
Haw Park Villa is the world’s only eclectic Chinese mythological park of its kind and most certainly one of the things to see in Singapore before you die.
