Casablabla has been a labour of love for owners Rory Bourke and Danjiel Maksimovic who spent two years researching and then skilfully combining the cultures of the world into one of Adelaide’s funkiest nightspots.
As you walk through the doors, you’ll find a treasure trove of elaborate trinkets and colourful artwork adorning every inch of available space – the results of years of travel to the world’s most exotic locations including Bali, Morocco, Turkey and Cambodia. Casablabla is a warmly-lit ‘multicultural tapas lounge bar’ that’s perfect to enjoy a night of great food and drink and cool urban beats from all over the world including DJs, live Brazilian samba bands, Soca music from the Caribbean and Flamenco from Spain as well as Middle-Eastern belly dancers.
The menu takes inspiration from tall over the world and the diverse flavours come from the freshest South Australian produce and the stars of the tapas menu include the Chorizo and Tallegio Croquettes, Beef Filet Mignon with Horseradish Mousse and the Confit Shallot and Goat’s Curd Tart. The gourmet pizza menu (Thursday is Pizza Night) is equally as innovative with highlights including the Baa Humbug with spiced ground lamb, yoghurt and mint and the Quack Sinatra with duck, plum and hoisin sauce, cucumber and spring onion. Tuesday is Paella Night and on Pachanga Wednesday you can learn to salsa dance with a great A$50 dinner deal.
A very good if not outstanding wine list features mainly Australian wines with a sprinkling of Old World offerings from France and Spain; the beer menu is as you’d expect from an Aussie bar; the cocktails are a mix of the classics and a choice of innovative mixes with a real multicultural flavour and the highlights of the spirits menu features a fantastic selection of rum, cachaça and tequila sourced, no doubt, from spending time in South American drinking dens!
The vibe at Casablabla is relaxed and smooth and is a world away from the neon and stainless steel that seems to dominate the bar scenes of major cities these days. It really is one of Adelaide’s hidden gems.
