Laytons Wine: Antipodean Wines for a Merry Christmas Dinner

A purist who loves the classics, he’s always on the lookout for new and exciting wines he wants his clients to try. Here, Tom gives us the lowdown on the best Australian and New Zealand wines to pair with a traditional Christmas dinner.

As the Christmas holidays approach, many people will be criss-crossing the globe to get home to see loved ones. As you grab last minute presents, ensure you have the power leads for your phone, tablet and laptop and start to pack, make sure you leave a little room for something decent to drink over the festive period!

Usually, we stick to the tried and tested Old World wines at Christmas but this year I’m going to shake it up a bit and I’m looking down under for inspiration.

 

Pre-Dinner

For our pre-dinner aperitif, I’ve chosen NV Hunter’s MiruMiru, a champagne-blend sparkling wine from Marlborough on the north-eastern tip of the South Island of New Zealand.  It’s a lovely pale straw colour with a fantastic creamy nose, ably backed up by subtle aromas of white peach and lemon. It has a rich, full palate with red fruits and citrus notes with a toasty, gentle finish and it’s a perfect warm-up to the main event.

Starter

Our starter is smoked salmon so I needed a wine with enough acidity to cut through the oiliness of the fish as well as complementing its meatiness. I went for a Pierro Chardonnay from Margaret River, widely regarded as Australia’s premier Chardonnay-producing region. Burgundian in style and rich in colour, the Pierro Chardonnay has a lush, forward nose combining subtle notes of citrus, mandarin and oak. On the palate you’ll find a deep complexity, refreshing acidity and a fabulous finish.

Mains

As the turkey is being carved and all the trimmings are being dished up, I’ll be uncorking a bottle or two of the quite delicious Felton Road Pinot Noir from the semi-arid inland basins of Central Otago on New Zealand’s South Island. This is a sumptuous wine with a nose of ripe red fruits and dark florals. On the palate there are savoury notes with some earthiness which adds to the complexity and the experience is completed with a long clean finish with some fine tannins. In my opinion, this is the perfect wine to go with a traditional Christmas dinner.

Dessert

As the turkey gets polished off and we move towards the warm, comforting embrace of the Christmas pudding, I’m taking a trip back to Hunter’s for their wonderful Hukapapa desert wine. Made from 100% Riesling, Hukapapa is the Maori word for ‘frost’ and fittingly, this wine is made in the ‘ice-wine’ style. It’s golden in colour and has wonderful aromas of lime, orange and stonefruit. On the palate there are flavours of honey and citrus marmalade and it an utterly fantastic wine to finish off an utterly fantastic meal.

Now it’s time to settle in on the sofa for an afternoon of classic films and a doze!
