The Penny Black

26/27 Boat Quay
Singapore 049817

The Penny Black is a warm, inviting wood-panelled Victorian pub that was built piece by piece by artisan craftsmen in England and shipped bit-by-bit to Singapore. *FYI* the Penny Black was the first self-adhesive stamp issued by the Royal Mail. It was black and cost a penny.

The pub is the spiritual home of the official Newcastle United Supporters Club Singapore and on match days, especially when the Magpies are playing you can expect a loud, busy bar full of scarves and songs but this is a Singaporean football crowd and the vibe is friendly and fun. It’s a great place to be when the football’s on.

The Penny Black overlooks the Singapore River on Boat Quay and you can sit outside on the quayside and watch the world go by or sit inside and watch the football – the choice is yours!

Every weekend they show live Premier League football and Aviva Premiership rugby and the food, cooked to order, is as you’d expect from a proper pub – there’s some salads because Singapore is boiling hot but you’ll also find Beef and Guinness Pie, real Sunday roasts, a full English breakfast, Cornish pasties and the most English of English dishes – the classic Chicken Tikka Masala as well as burgers, bacon butties with HP Sauce and an apple crumble made with Granny Smith’s!

Beers on tap include Kilkenney, Strongbow, Guinness, Old Speckled Hen and Heineken and there’s a full drinks menu including wine, cocktails, liqueurs and spirits.

If you’re looking for an authentic English pub to watch the football in Singapore, Penny Black may be just the ticket.
