Singapore Cricket Club

The Singapore Cricket Club, or SCC, is one of the Garden City’s – indeed Asia’s – premier sports and social clubs and ranks second in longevity (by 10 years) to the Singapore Sporting Club. Cricket has been played on the Padang since at least 1837, just 18 years after Sir Stamford Raffles established the settlement and the pavilion you see today – the third – was built in 1884 and has been extended several times in the 130+ years since.

Predominantly a sports club and competing at all levels in leagues and tournaments, members  can choose from not only cricket but a range of outdoor sports such as hockey, lawn bowls, golf, netball, soccer, tennis and rugby as well as the more sedate indoor pastimes of darts, bridge, billiards and snooker and Balut, a dice game similar to Yahtzee.

There are seven restaurants and bars to choose from including the al fresco Courtyard, the relaxed Oval & Verandah, fine dining at the Padang Restaurant, beers and food at Stumps bar and of course no colonial-era club would be without the obligatory Men’s Bar with live sports and snooker tables!

The SCC has a real country club feel and the facilities include a reference library, state-of-the-art gym, squash and tennis courts, a beautifully-manicured lawn bowling green and of course Padang Field, a hallowed sports ground that has seen the likes of the famous 1959 Australian test side as well as England’s World Cup winners Banks, Charlton, Hunt, Hurst and Peters as well as Pat Jennings, Kevin Keegan and Tony Woodcock for an invitational in the early 1990s.

One thing you shouldn’t miss is Wine of the Month and Cake of the Month; they’re worth the membership fees alone!
