As the name suggests, the National Zoo & Aquarium is Australia’s only combined zoo and aquarium and just five minutes from the centre of Canberra you’ll find some of the most amazing creatures in the world.
In typical Aussie fashion you can picnic and BBQ at the zoo but the star has to be the Zooventure Tour. For $120 ($145 on weekends) you can handfeed lions, tigers, dingoes, brown bears and giraffes as well as patting a rhino and hugging a python for the most hands-on zoo experience in Australia, a country famous for spectacular animals.
If that wasn’t enough, you can Meet a Cheetah ($160, $185 weekends including an all-day zoo pass) for an up close and personal rendezvous with the world’s fastest land animal and one of the friendliest of all the big cats and you can also become a zookeeper for a day for the ‘ultimate all-day wildlife experience’. You’ll meet some or all of the zoo’s greatest hits including cheetahs, cougars, bears, snakes, pandas, pythons, sharks, monkeys, kangaroos, emus, lions and tigers and bears (oh my…!)*
*Kudos if you get the reference!
Perhaps the star of the show at the zoo isn’t actually an animal. In the grounds of the zoo is Jamala Wildlife Lodge, the ultimate overnight safari. The Giraffe Tree Houses are perched high up in the canopy and the giraffes come up to your balcony for a snack and in the Jungle Bungalow, all that separates your bedroom, living room and bathroom from bears, tigers, lions and cheetahs is a pane of (very thick and very strong) glass.
The National Zoo & Aquarium in Canberra is a fantastic place for the whole family and a ‘must see’ on any trip to ACT.
