Marina Barrage is a dam constructed to block the confluence of the Singapore and Kallang Rivers and the beautifully-kept Green Roof is one of the very best places in Singapore to fly a kite. This is not hi-tech digital wizardry, this is actually getting out there and remembering the days before consoles and permanently-attached phones!
Up on the roof you’ll find all sorts of people, from mums and dads showing their kids how to fly a kite for the first time to professionals pulling extreme stunts to the amazement of everyone up there. It’s not only the kites that are the big draw here; there are also the incredible views over the Marina Bay and beyond.
On the weekends, you’ll find groups of teenagers relaxing and having fun as well as couples, families and tour groups having a picnic and enjoying the vista.
You can bring your own kite or you can visit Barrage Cove for kites, gifts and picnic food. They have a huge selection of kites for all ages and abilities in all shapes sizes and colours, from a ladybird, an Angry Bird or a lion for the kids to the sleek Whopper2 for experienced hobbyists.
The kites start at around S$20 up to S$100+ and they also sell all the accessories you’ll need for a fun day on the roof in the sunshine!
When you’re done in the sun, there’s also a water play area for the kids as well as two great places to eat, the Sembawang Eating House, a Singapore-style seafood café and the Bottle Tree Seafood Restaurant.
