Itacho Sushi

2 Orchard Turn
ION Orchard #B3-20
Singapore 238801

There are eight Itacho Sushi outlets across Singapore and they have all become famous for delicious, handmade-to-order and cheap (some of the sushi pieces are as low as 40c each) Japanese food.

Itacho means ‘chief chef’ in Japanese and the brand has become popular with teenagers who need their sushi fix before a night at the cinema. It’s not fine dining and has a somewhat fast-food feel and while the flagship on Orchard Road is reputed to be the best of the eight, in truth there’s very little to separate them – it all depends on where in Singapore you are!

Expect to queue at peak times, especially around the start of summer when they serve sawa gani, tiny Japanese freshwater crabs no more than an inch in diameter that are deep-fried whole and then lightly salted. Think salty, delicious and unbelievably moreish crab-flavoured fries and you’ll realise why there are queues!

Unusually for an in-and-out sushi place, they recommend sake called Tamano Hikari Bizen Omachi that is supposed to pair perfectly with your meal due to its deep flavour and fruity aroma.

We all need to get our sushi fix every now and again and if you’re strapped for time or on a budget, you can’t get better than Itacho Sushi.
